Jonathan Wesaya Maina
Country Director, Kenya
Jonathan has a BA in English and Language Literature from Moi University, Kenya. He served as Education Advisor for Save the Children and as the Country Director for Discovery Learning Alliance. He holds two Master’s Degrees: Masters of Philosophy in Developing Studies and a Post Graduate Diploma in Human Resource Management (Distinction) from Moi University. He is also a writer and producer with Nation TV – Kenya.
Dr. Evelyn Jepkemei
Treasurer, Kenya
Evelyn has spent her entire career focused on improving education in Kenya. Her roles have included serving as a Research Officer at the Kenya Institute of Education, Senior Assistant Director of Education at the Kenyan Ministry of Education and Senior Education Specialist for the Primary Math and Reading Initiative, Tusome, which is a USAID/DFID funded initiative implemented by the Kenyan Ministry of Education and RTI. She is currently an Education Advisor for the World University Service of Canada, East Africa. Evelyn received her PhD Degree from the Moi University, Kenya.
Kevin Otieno
Director of Data Management, Kenya
Kevin has a wide range of experience in implementing education-based programs that champion student participation and supportive teaching. Having worked in international
organizations in education, he has been directly
involved in designing, developing and implementing teaching training programs aimed at improving basic
literacy and numeracy skills at the primary school levels. Along with teacher training, Kevin is focused on creating evaluation tools to document the efficacy of the IOL methodology.
Prof. Esther Alando
Training Coordinator, Kenya
Esther is a Professor of Education at the University of Nairobi. She has a wide range of experience in matters of education, particularly in teacher development and support. She has been affiliated with IOL almost since its inception. After having investigated the IOL methodology extensively, and having determined its effectiveness in improving learning outcomes, Prof. Alando enthusiastically joined the IOL board in Kenya.
Stephen Abere
Board Member
Stephen is one of the pioneers of IOL. He holds a BA in Education and a Master’s Degree in Educational
Administration from the University of Nairobi. He began his career as a high school teacher and taught for four years before
joining the Ministry of Education as administrator. He has been working in the area of education for the past 18 years.
Currently, he is a subcounty Director of Education, overseeing education programs in the district. He is married and the proud father of two sons.
Prof. Samson Gunga
Board Member
Samson is the current Dean of the School of Education at the University of Nairobi. He is a Professor of Philosophy of
Education. He has authored several articles in educational journals, e-books and
learning modules. Prof. Gunga feels strongly that IOL can play a critical role in helping Kenyan Primary and Secondary teachers implement a newly adopted national curriculum that focuses on creativity, collaboration and values.
Onesmus Kiminza
Board Member
Onesmus is a former Director of Education in the Ministry of Education – Republic of Kenya. He coordinated the development and implementation of Kenya’s national education sector plan whose focus is on improved quality of education through enhanced performance in the early grade literacy and numeracy. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Education and two Masters Degrees, and is currently enrolled in a PhD program at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa.
Dr. Damaris Parsitau
Board Member
Dr. Parsitau is currently a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Philosophy, History and Religious Studies at Egerton University in Kenya. She has a wealth of experience in teaching, research, leadership training, advocacy, and mentorship. She was a visiting Research Associate at Harvard University, 2019 and the Brookings Institute in Washington DC, 2017. Dr. Parsitau has also held various visiting research fellowships in South Africa, UK, Scotland and in Europe. She received her PhD in Philosophy at the Kenyatta University.
